Star Light, Star Bright

Star
Faintly
Twinkling
In the dusky
Sky — You’re there even
When I can’t see your light
Like in the daytime, or night
When clouds obscure most ev’rything
I know comrade stars form animals
And warriors and women above me
Unseen Orion still wields his club aloft
While vain Cassiopeia admires herself
I can’t see them but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist
One little star
First star I see
Reminds me of
What is unseen
And beautiful
And just as real


W3 prompt: Write a “Tree of Life” poem about changes, impermanence and strength.

Tree of Life format:

  • An uplifting poem in 19 lines;
  • Syllabic: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-4-4-4-4-4-4;
  • Unrhymed;
  • Alignment: Centered

I know that this poem isn’t about changes, impermanence and strength. I had an idea of what I wanted to write, but all of the sudden I had veered off in a different direction. Sorry. Not really sorry.

Actually, pretty sure this is the moon, but it will have to do.

      1. yes and hud was the man in the moon but the royals lost yet again. today is the bday of your namesake, a real pain in the ass . born today in 1966 she said i care for you deeply as she accused me of sexual harassment times two. now that s funny thirty years after the fact my dear!

  1. Wow – this brings me back to my childhood, Sally! I would never have thought to compose a star- or constellation-related poem for this prompt… it’s so beautiful!

      1. Seriously, I had a whole different direction I was planning to go as I thought about the prompt yesterday. But when I wrote this morning, that’s what came out. It probably didn’t help that I woke this morning in the middle of a very vivid dream/nightmare in which I was giving a talk to an unruly audience about William Blake and how there’s always more than meets the eye. I’m not sure the connection and I know this sounds very strange, but welcome to my life.

  2. Hi Sally, it’s a lovely poem, and you got the impermanence in there, the stars are basically energy, and they are changing all the time, we can’t see the changes because they are faraway. Thanks for joining the prompt! 🙂

  3. I enjoyed your poem, I loved the idea of the stars being there even when we don’t see, and we actually still see them when they are gone, so the impermanence was there.
