The monastic body is held together
not by human admirations and enthusiasms
which make men heroes and saints before their time
but on the sober truth
which accepts men
exactly
as they are
in order to help them become
what they ought to be.
Thomas Merton, The Silent Life

It’s the cynic in me that thinks people are incapable of doing so.
